Watford Women’s star Helen Ward has admitted that the third UK national lockdown, leading to schools closing until at least mid-February, has led her to consider retirement from football.
Ward, who grew up in Watford’s academy before playing for the likes of Arsenal Ladies and Chelsea Ladies, has 89 caps for her country, Wales, and is the record goal scorer, but could be saying goodbye to her playing days, she admitted on Twitter.
Tiers three to seven of women’s football were suspended by the FA after Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement on January 4.
I’m seriously considering retirement. Not sure I’ve got it in me to keep training alone, home school a 6 year old and entertain a 3 year old. No chance I can do all three effectively https://t.co/p1J1HZ6esn

While Watford Women’s will have to wait until they return to action, the men’s team have been given the all-clear to continue due to their ‘elite’ status.
