SHOCKING: Hemel care home in hot water over shower controversy

Residents at a care home in Hemel Hempstead went 28 days without a bath a report revealed.

Five people staying at The Lodge care home did not have a bath from January 21 to February 17 this year, according to a report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

At the time of the inspection, The Lodge had 34 residents using the services but the home did not have enough staff to provide care.

The report, which graded the care home as “requires improvement”, also revealed concerns over medicine management and record keeping.

In fact, people were not always receiving their medicines as intended by the prescriber.

It also mentioned when things went wrong, lessons were not always learnt and staff practices were not changed to improve the quality and safety of the care provided.

The CQC said: “The information recorded by staff was not always consistent, in enough detail and not always submitted to the registered manager. As a result, some safeguarding incidents were not reported to the local safeguarding authority for investigation.

“Staff told us they were aware of people’s needs, however there was not enough staff to meet people’s needs safely and effectively.

“We observed people left waiting for staff, sitting in wheelchairs without pressure relieving cushions in place, although care plans detailed they had to sit on those. This increased the risk of people’s skin breaking down.”

Despite the negatives, people told the CQC they felt safe living in the home. One person said  “I do feel safe. Staff help me when I need it.”

Relatives mentioned they were happy with the care and support people received in the home.

The CQC said it required an action plan from The Lodge  to understand what they will do to improve the standards of quality and safety.

The Lodge commented: “As a provider we are actively working with both CQC and Hertfordshire County Council to improve our service.

“Following the CQC inspection, The Lodge Care Home has since had two positive visits from Hertfordshire County Council.

“We will continue to work closely with both regulators.”
