SENSORY GARDEN: Renovation at Kings Langley library underway

Published on: 26th August 2023   |   By: Darius Morgan   |   Category: Uncategorized

Work has begun to transform a neglected courtyard at Kings Langley Community Library into a rejuvenated, welcoming space.

Library volunteers have for many months been engaged in a dialogue with the Hertfordshire Library Service to refurbish and repurpose the courtyard from “ugly jungle to sensory garden”.

The new garden will have seating areas for visitors and will also feature raised beds with “fragrant planting”.

In time, there are hopes of installing a solar-powered water feature and wind chimes. The garden will host occasional children’s storytimes, and the library reading group has expressed an interest in using the area for their monthly meetings.

Caroline Brankin, chair of the Kings Langley Community Library volunteer committee, said: “We realise that we can’t do everything at once, but the volunteers have been busy fundraising for more than a year from our monthly book sales at the village market, and from ticket sales for our library talks and events. We estimate the total cost of the project to be around £6,000.

“We have been very fortunate to have received funds towards the project from councillor Richard Roberts, our Kings Langley county councillor from his locality fund, and also from the Kings Langley Carnival Committee in 2022.”

Principle works began on July 20, with 46 sacks of shredded garden foliage being cleared out.

The library committee is aiming to hold an opening event in early October.

Caroline added: “We have a small team of garden volunteers who have already spent many hours clearing the space and researching the items we need to use. Once the garden is up and running, they will be responsible for its maintenance, although we would be very happy to receive any offers of help!”
