Random Café in Garston has grown a super-sized squash and is running a competition for residents to guess its size.
Nestled by the sunflowers at the end of the café’s community garden, lies a beast of a pumpkin.
This is the second giant fruit to be grown by the non-profit café, with last year’s pumpkin weighing in at 26.9kg.
The giant will be weighed at the craft fair, taking place at the Meriden Community Centre from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, November 2, and there will also be a competition to see who can guess its weight.
The question on everyone’s lips is will it weigh more or less than last year?
Jenny, a volunteer at the café, said: “The seeds were planted in April/May in our polytunnel nursery, then planted out after the risk of frost has passed.”
Along with the pumpkin, the green-fingered team has grown an abundance of beetroot, tomatoes, green beans, squash, cucumbers and aubergines.
The produce is used at the café and is also sold as a way of raising funds.
Jane Johnson, founder of Random Café and project manager, said: “We had great success with tomatoes this year and have made some into preserves that will also be available at our craft fair on Saturday, November 2.”
The craft fair is an annual event and offers a wide range of local items for sale, including handmade goods, local honey, gifts and more.
