A society dedicated to protecting a rare chalk stream that runs through St Albans is calling for a hosepipe ban to protect it.
The 16-mile River Ver makes its way from Kenworthy Lynch through Markyate, Redbourn and St Albans, but due to the ongoing drought in the UK, large parts of it have dried up.
The Ver Valley Society is now calling for local water providers, Affinity Water, to introduce a hosepipe ban in the area to try and help protect this precious national resource.
A spokesperson for the society said: “ Let’s not kid ourselves; a hosepipe ban won’t solve everything. However, it’s a very good way to signal to consumers that small actions right now will save water and might prevent a much larger future inconvenience. Not to mention helping the environment and giving the river an opportunity to flow for just that bit longer.”
Affinity Water have been contacted for comment.
