A community stalwart from Sarratt was among 60 people to be honoured at a special reception by the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire at The Grove last month celebrating Hertfordshire’s recipients from the last two honours lists.

Carol Chorley was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2018 for all the time, energy and care she has given to the Sarratt community over the past 30 years.

Speaking to CroxleyNews, Carol said she never expected to get the award.

She commented: “It was a complete surprise and something that had never entered my head.”

Carol is involved in a host of different organisations in the village which she describes as a busy caring community.

She said: “I’m on the British Legion Committee. We organise small social evenings and regularly take two coachloads of people from the village on the Thames for a boat trip. We also organise the annual Remembrance events.”

Carol also sits on the Cancer Research Committee and is also chairman of Sarratt Care which she describes as one of the most important organisations in the village. Sarratt Care is day to day help provided by volunteers to anyone who has a genuine need.

She explained: “We organise two coffee mornings for people in the village a month. We have a group of drivers to take people to hospital appointments, hold a lunch once a month and also run a meals on wheels service. We are generally very caring.”

As if all the above wasn’t enough, Carol is also one of the trustees of the Days Charity which built six alms houses for people in the village over 200 years ago. She also helps organise village celebrations to mark important national events.

Carol explained why she felt it was vital to get involved in village life.

She added: “I won’t be doing this for many more years and the time will come when somebody younger needs to take over. It’s given me a lot of pleasure to do this for other people and I haven’t done anything I haven’t enjoyed.”
