A karate teacher from Bushey is setting up a new group in the town to promote community togetherness, boost residents’ physical fitness, and help people to build confidence.
Richard Plaskow jointly runs Hertfordshire KDS, part of a not-for-profit global organisation with a 60-year history. The club has two community karate groups in St Albans and Stevenage. Richard, who also works in Stevenage, has been running sessions for the last 18 months.
The new group will open at St Peter’s Church Hall in Bushey on Thursday, September 12.
Richard said: “People imagine karate to be noisy and high impact, but the style we teach is relaxed. Many of our members are aged 50-plus.
“I have been practising karate for 16 years and it has helped me through rough times in my life. It provides a great sense of routine. I firmly believe physical wellbeing is the key to mental wellbeing.
“We provide a safe space for people. One of our attendees, a young girl who was quite introverted, said she thinks of the classes as her ‘safe place’ and has really come out of her shell.”
Attendees will be charged a small fee to contribute to the cost of hiring the hall. To find out more, visit www.t.ly/GbVnI
