Watford Harriers Athletics Club are celebrating their first win of the season, after coming out top of the Senior Athletics League.

The club had strong men’s and women’s teams, with athletes taking part in nearly every event on Saturday, May 18.

The Watford club finished the day on 338 points, after several major wins including first place in A string 100m and 200m for Omaserichi, first place in B string 100m and 200m for Abigail, and first place in 4 x 100m for the men’s relay team.

Speaking to WATFORDnews, Watford Harriers president Richard Parles said: “Our club has grown immensely over the last few years and we now have the strongest committee I can remember and an ever-growing number of parent helpers.

“But it is, of course, our young athletes who are driving the club forward and have high hopes of gaining promotion this year.

“We have many excellent coaches, but I must single out Peter Griffiths, our sprints coach, who has produced a number of Internationals and English Schools Champions and even a European U17 Champion a couple of years back.”

The club boasts its open graded meetings, which they run in conjunction with the British Minors Club every two weeks, attracting the best athletes from across the county.

Richard continued: “The biggest improvement in the club is the middle-distance group coached by Lianne Langford. The club has seen some quite astonishing improvements over the last two years.

“I think my original coach, Jack Harris, who was a founder member of Watford Harriers, would be delighted with the recent improvements in the club as we enter our centenary year next year!”

The club is currently looking for field event athletes. To find out more, please visit their website at watfordharriers.org.uk
