Sportsman Alex Walker has launched a new group called Ricky Runners, aimed at all those who are interested in running amongst friends and potentially sharing a pint afterwards.
Alex explained: “There are 400-odd runners at the Ricky Park Run every Saturday, so I was surprised to find that we don’t have a running club in Rickmansworth, especially when there are two in Watford alone. There is the Ricky Running Sisters, of course, but I’m not sure that’s a space I can join!”
On their first run this December, Alex and four others of mixed abilities took part in a 5km. Next time, says Alex, the route will have an optional 3km extension loop to cater to those wanting to run further without excluding those happy to finish at the 5km mark.
Alex added: “If you can build the habit of running, you’ve got a skill for life. Every time you’re stressed, all you need to do is put on your trainers and go. You don’t need fancy equipment and the track begins on your doorstep. Building those skills is so much more important than speed.
“I didn’t think that anyone would come to the first one, so I was absolutely delighted that people showed up!”
Ricky Runners meets on a Sunday evening at The Feathers Pub on Church Street. Everyone is welcome to join the Facebook group by the same name.
