RECYCLED POPPIES: Environmentally friendly poppies around Garston help commemorate Remembrance Day

Published on: 26th October 2020   |   By: Amneet Kaur   |   Category: Uncategorized

Numerous poppies have gone up around Garston to help commemorate Remembrance Day.

Meriden ward councillors Jennifer Pattinson and Amanda Grimston went around Garston to display environmentally friendly poppies around the streets.

They believe it’s important to find different ways to remember as this year, due to COVID-19, all the services will be held online or through Zoom.

Cllr Jennifer Pattinson said: “Quite often we get criticised because of the poppies, because they are single use plastic, but these ones are last year’s poppies from the front of lorries.

“We bought them from the Royal British Legion (RBL), so the poppy appeal still gets the money but they have been re-used in a different way.

“We will use them again next year so they won’t go into landfill and we will continue to donate to the RBL.

“I think if we get a big display of poppies around the streets it will help people to commemorate the day while not getting together to remember.”
