The local community came together to reward good causes and celebrate another successful year of the Abbots Langley Tough Ten (ALTT) on Friday, January 24.
In 2024, ALTT raised £9,000 through four races in October and Christmas Fete. These funds have now been donated back to local causes benefitting residents across Abbots Langley.
Among the beneficiaries announced at the awards ceremony, held at Breakspeare School last month, were the Abbots Langley Flower Club and the Monday Club, which offers a social meeting place for people with learning difficulties. Both received £500. Breakspeare School was given £750, while the West Herts Hospitals Charity (WHHC) was given a cheque for £5,000.
WHHC is raising money for a new Savi Scout machine which helps to pinpoint breast tumours for removal. There was barely a dry eye in the house when the charity announced it had hit its £200,000 target within months of starting its campaign, thanks to support from ALTT.
Emily Theobald, senior fundraising officer for WHHC, said: “The support from ALTT has been incredibly overwhelming. The Savi Scout appeal is a game-changer for Hertfordshire and for people in this community, so to be a recipient of this means a huge amount to us, people who are suffering with breast cancer, and people who are going to come afterwards.
“It’s been an absolute pleasure, and it’s a real honour to be here.”
Awards were also given to amazing people who help to make ALTT events special. Among the winners were Herts Police, who took the Emergency Services Cup, and Debbie Hold from the Monday Club, who won the Graham Taylor Community Cup.
Committee member at ALTT Alison Warner told ABBOTSnews: “We had our MP and the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire here this evening, which was absolutely amazing. We were blown away with their support.
“We’re delighted. There were lots of happy faces. I say to people it’s a bit like being a fairy godmother because you’re helping so many people. I know it’s not my money, but the ALTT committee helped to generate it.”
One of the priorities for Alison was to ensure more runners seek sponsorship next year to boost the funds raised for local causes.
Speaking at his first ALTT event, Gagan Mohindra, MP for South West Hertfordshire, told ABBOTSnews: “I’ve been lucky enough to hear about the Tough Ten, and when I was asked to come here this evening, my answer was absolutely yes.
