REAL BUZZ: Northwood-run beekeeping charity prepares for World Bee Day celebrations

Published on: 8th April 2022   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Friday, May 20, is World Bee Day, and a Northwood woman whose charity supports beekeeping in various countries in Africa is trying to get people to celebrate the occasion.

Hania Gudiens is a trustee for Bees Abroad, which raises awareness about the importance of bees in our everyday life and encourage beekeeping initiatives in countries such as Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana and Sierra Leone.

These projects allow people like 57-year-old Anastazia to escape impoverished situations and commit to something that will aid their community.

Justin Nswilla, the trainer in charge of Anastazia’s ‘Jikomboe (self-liberation) group’, said: “The women didn’t have any knowledge of beekeeping and were afraid of the bees, but now, they are very bold and are ready to work very hard to ensure the project is successful.”

Bees Abroad are inviting schools, organisations, community groups and individuals to celebrate World Bee Day, running several events in the lead-up to the big day in May.

This includes a World Bee Day quiz, hosted by the actor John Foley, an online lecture series with various guest speakers from the world of beekeeping and a World Bee Day Luncheon at the Wax Chandler’s Hall in Central London, a bee-themed dinner with the bishop of London and various experts.

They are also encouraging the sponsoring of their global beekeeping projects, with anybody interested being asked to contact Rachel Monger at rachel_monger@beesabroad.org.uk or visit the charity’s website at www.beesabroad.org.uk.
