HORSE POWER: Radlett sanctuary boosted by £20,000 lottery donation

A Radlett-based animal sanctuary that provides a home for abandoned horses has received a £20,000 donation.

Cecil’s Horse Sanctuary, which is based in Radlett and has locations across Beds, Herts and Bucks, was given the donation as part of the People’s Postcode Lottery’s (PPL) weekly Millionaire Street prize.

The sanctuary, which was founded by Julie Blake in 2016, provides a home for more than 80 horses, ponies, mules and donkeys who been abandoned, neglected or have grown too old for their owners to care for them.

Run by volunteers, the charity has a policy of never putting a healthy horse down.

Speaking to PPL, Julie said: “We’re the last line. When you feel like you’ve got nowhere else to go, these horses can come to us.

“We’re going to use the money donated to make a new fence, which is very important for us. Having such a large amount of money really helps us because we would never be able to achieve that. So, it will be amazing to see that go up and know that the ponies are safe.”

The sanctuary is also looking for a new site for the animals they currently have in Elstree. This comes after developers told them to leave the site following the submission of a planning application in September 2023 for a new retirement village.

Due to this development, there is a risk that the lack of space for the horses could lead to the charity having no option but to break its policy and euthanise some of the animals.

It is hoped that this new investment will go some way to preventing this from becoming a reality.
