REACH OUT: Volunteers needed to help lonely older residents in Hertfordshire

Published on: 1st June 2024   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Hertfordshire organisation is looking for residents to visit and support elderly residents.

Reach Out offers companionship and practical support to people as they recover following time in hospital and helps them to rebuild their confidence.

The project is looking for local people who can spare an hour a week to help an elderly person in their area who is feeling lonely and isolated.

Hertfordshire resident Elsie lives alone and found herself feeling desperately lonely while recovering from surgery. With family living far away, she could go for days without seeing or speaking to anyone. She is hard of hearing and so struggled to keep in contact with relatives by phone.

Reach Out introduced Elsie to Denise, who now visits her once a week. They chat over tea and Denise helps Elsie to water her house plants.

Elsie says that Denise has been so kind and helpful, and she really looks forward to her visits. Denise loves spending time with Elsie and says she always leaves smiling as they have such a nice time together.

Reach Out volunteers can help people feel connected to their local community, while offering vital support and encouragement to them as they recover. Just giving a small amount of your time can make a huge difference.
