Residents are desperate to keep one of Rickmansworth’s most popular pubs open as it’s put up for sale.
J D Wetherspoons-owned pub, The Pennsylvanian, has been put up for sale and will close if bought, much to the dismay of hundreds of residents.
Ricky resident Charles Lewinton set up a Change.org petition to save the pub, which is one of 16 Wetherspoons pubs put up for sale nationwide. The petition currently has over 200 signatures.
Charles said: “The Pennsylvanian is a much loved local pub in Rickmansworth and its closure would be of a significant detriment to the town.
“The pub provides a good value for both food and drinks, and is busy most of the day. There are alternative pubs in the area also offering food and drinks, however, none come close to the value J D Wetherspoon is able to offer. The closure of the pub would no doubt drive up the local prices as other pubs currently keep their prices reasonable to compete.
A J D Wetherspoons spokesperson said: “We can confirm that The Pennsylvanian in Rickmansworth has been put up for sale.
“We totally understand that our loyal customers and staff will be disappointed with this decision. However, Wetherspoon, does on occasion, put some of its pubs up for sale. It is a commercial decision taken by the company taken after long consideration.
“The pub will continue to trade as normal until a buyer is found. We have told our staff that if the pub is sold and they do not transfer to the purchaser, then we would look to redeploy our employees at other Wetherspoon pubs in the region.”
A number of residents have said they aren’t disappointed with the potential closure, as they feel the pub could do with major improvements.
