Police are appealing for witnesses and information after an assault in St Albans city centre.

The incident occurred in St Peters Street, close to the museum, between 1.57am and 2.10am on Sunday, April 7.

It was reported that as two people left The Swan pub in Upper Dagnall Street, they were approached by a group of around five or six men between the ages of 19 and 20.

One of the men punched one of the victims. The friend of the victim stepped in to help, before the group closed around him and punched him several times.

Both victims suffered bruising and swelling to their cheeks before passers-by intervened.

PC C-Jay Callaghan of the St Albans Intervention Team said: “Enquiries are continuing at this time to trace those involved, including a review of CCTV.

“As part of the ongoing investigation, I am appealing to anyone who either witnessed this incident or was in the area at the time and might have spotted something suspicious, to contact me.

“I am especially interested in speaking to those who were passing by and managed to split the altercation up. Please email me via c-jay.callaghan@herts.police.uk
