An actor who stars in the new film Wonka has praised Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, where it was filmed, in a recent interview.

Jim Carter, best known for playing Mr. Carson in period drama Downton Abbey, features in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel, which releases to cinemas today (Friday, December 8).

In an interview with BBC News, Jim said that the scale of the production at the Leavesden studios was like “old-time movie-making”.

He added: “There were all these American cars and taxis which are used in the Fast & Furious films, which I never knew were made in Leavesden, so it feels like proper filmmaking.”

Since being used as the hub for the Harry Potter film series in the 2000s, the studios have become one of the most popular filming spots in the world, with 2023 blockbusters such as BarbieThe Flash and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One all using the facilities.

Wonka stars Timothée Chalamet as famous chocolatier Willy Wonka in his younger years. Featuring an all-star cast including Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant and Sally Hawkins, the majority of the production took place at the Leavesden studios.

Other scenes were shot in St Albans’ Verulamium Park, with young fans of superstar Chalamet camping out for a glimpse of the actor. Some of the money paid by Warner Bros. to St Albans City & District Council for the park’s use has been ring-fenced to be spent on improvements at the popular green space.
