PROJECT PROGRESS: Northwood residents rejoice as end to flooding problems in sight

Published on: 14th November 2021   |   By: Holly Bullen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Northwood residents are overjoyed after a project aiming to improve Northwood Recreation Ground has reached a significant milestone.

The recreation ground, beloved by many had fallen victim to a number of problems, with a drainage issue transforming the ground into a ‘swamp’.

Resident, Ben Rawson-Jones, set up the Friends of Northwood Recreation Ground to work with the council to take action to save the area.

Now the group have cause to celebrate, with the introduction of a ‘seasonal pond’ offering a solution to the drainage problems.

Dragana Knezevic, countryside and conservation officer on the Greenspaces on Hillingdon Council, said she is thrilled to be working with the group with funds from the council.

She said: “The best part of my job is working with volunteers. Ben always reports back on how people are enthusiastic about the progress.

“When the pond establishes we will have a dry path and hopefully a wet area where we want it.

“It’s great to see the complaints turn into something positive.”

Ben said: “It’s wonderful to see what can be achieved when the council and community work together.

“Our green spaces are so precious, for humans and wildlife alike. It’s early days on the Northwood Recreation Ground project, but it’s heart-warming to see the positive changes such as the new pond and my thanks go to Dragana and everyone who has volunteered so far.

“It’s also wonderful to see local residents, some who live only a few doors away, meeting each other properly for the first time. Given the isolation we’ve all endured in the last couple of years, this project is a great way to build and share something special together and I’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch and get involved.”
