Stanmore residents have been warned to be on the lookout for chalk markings outside their homes used as a secret code by burglars. The markings are left by would-be criminals who have scoped out a property. They give details about a property, for example if it is alarmed, occupied by a woman living alone, or if there is something worth stealing. Similar chalk markings have been reported in other parts of the country as well. If people see suspicious markings outside their homes they are advised to call the police non-emergency number on 101.
