PRISON PAST: St Albans museum’s new exhibition to explore crime and punishment

Published on: 26th September 2024   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

A new exhibition is opening at St Albans Museum + Gallery later this month.

Catching the Chain will take place at the Town Hall venue from Friday, October 11, until April next year.

The free exhibition is inspired by the museum’s cells and courtroom, and explores the history of criminal justice and the different ways in which local communities have dealt with crime.

The phrase ‘catching the chain’ is commonly used in prison communities to refer to leaving prison and re-entering society.

The exhibition has been produced thanks to funding from Arts Council England, with support from a variety of different organisations such as the Hertfordshire Association for the Care and Rehabilitation of Offenders.

The event website says: “Our exhibition partners include a wide range of organisations and individuals with lived experience inside and outside the criminal justice system. There will be a whole series of associated performances and events within the museum and across the city.”
