A Rickmansworth-based arts charity has recently sponsored a major exhibition of works created by prisoners and young offenders in the UK.
This is the second year in a row that The Arts Society Rickmansworth (TASR) has worked with the Koestler Trust, which gathers together more than 6,000 pieces of art made by inmates across the country, including some from the Mount prison near Bovingdon.
Curated by famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, the exhibition ran for two months at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank, finishing on December 18. The concept of this year’s showcase was focused around was freedom.
Several TASR members were guided around the exhibit by ex-prisoners.
TASR president and Rickmansworth resident Gill Gowing said: “My society is really pleased to support the Koestler Trust in this important work.
“The exceptional quality of the paintings, sculpture and poetry displays the skill and dedication of those who have produced it.
“I know that many prisoners feel real pride and renewed purpose from participating in this creative work.”
