Potten brothers shut their doors after nearly 60 years of business

One of the longest serving car garages in Hertfordshire is closing its doors after serving the community of Bushey for nearly 60 years.

Elstree Road Garage has been open since 1962 and has been passed through two generations.

Brothers Colin, 58, and Anthony Potten, 62, have been working together for over 40 years and initially started working in the garage, when it was owned by their father Fred, at the age of 12.

Speaking to BusheyNews, Colin believed that it was the right time to close after they were approached by developers who wanted to buy the land.

He said: “I think it was the right time to go, we had no one else to take it over and were approached by developers so it felt right.

“It is a mixed feeling as we are freeing up some time for our lives, but we are also saying goodbye to our loyal customers whom we have befriended over the years.

“We have had so many people come in since the news and have had some very nice words to say.

“Tony and I are very grateful for all the support received from our customers as this has enabled us to keep a small business running for so long.”

Despite the closure of the garage, which is loved by all in the community, the brothers are setting up a mobile home service which will allow them to visit customers at their homes to fix general repairs to their cars. Batterys, bulbs, level checking, mirror replacement and more.

Colin said: “My brother is moving to the Isle of White to carry out the business there and I am carrying it out locally in Bushey and surrounding areas.

Locals and customers of the brother’s business have taken to Facebook to react to the news.

One user said: “I’ve been using them for 20 years – very sad to see them go.”

Another user said: “Many in Bushey will sorely miss Tony and Colin, always gave a first class service and always with a smile, their dad Fred was a wonderful character, I hope they enjoy the future.”
