Victoria Collins, MP for Harpenden and Berkhamsted, recently paid a visit to local mental health charity Hector’s House.
Berkhamsted-based Hector’s House was set up after Hector Stringer sadly took his own life aged 18 in 2011. The charity aims to prevent suicide through education, awareness and support.
At the meeting on Thursday, February 13, founder Rob Stringer explained that the charity has had to become more reliant on support from the public as it faces a “sudden” decrease in grant support.
A total of £10,142.60 was collected through the charity’s partnership with Tring Brewery last year.
Rob asked for a more uplifting outlook of the world to come from the House of Commons.
He said: “We hear a lot how horrible the world is, and in Hector’s House, the people I hear and see, I know there’s so much love and kindness. People are endlessly kind.
“We need more positive things coming from everywhere, including Westminster. We need everyone to be saying that it’ll all be okay.”
Ms Collins MP said it is important to establish a strong connection between businesses and charities within her constituency.
She said: “The job is to hold people accountable, but from a government perspective, what I do think is missing is that positive vision of where we can go. There could’ve been a real narrative around what we’re building.
“For us, it’s about opening a relationship. There’s no official job description for the bit outside of voting; you make it up as you go along.
“But for me, I want to be a super connecter and solution finder. I know I can’t do it all, but I can help link organisations and boost what’s happening to help people work together.”
