PLAY ON: Council plans £450k investment into playing fields

An estimated £457,000 could be spent on refurbishing Denham Way Playing Fields in Maple Cross if council plans go ahead.

Hoping to get the development in motion by spring, Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) are planning the regeneration of the area due to aging tennis courts reaching the end of their lifespan and to accommodate the area’s growing population, according to documents posted on their website.

With the community infrastructure levity (CIL) paying for £347,000 of the project, the council are also hoping for contributions from HS2 Ltd, the Herts FA and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

With the development taking place in three stages, the plans include a new play area, three tennis courts with floodlights and an outdoor gym in the first phase.

This would be followed by improvements to the fields’ pathways and seating, as well as a multi-use games area, a new pavilion and a formal garden. A proposed third phase would also provide car parking, but this has not been costed yet and is currently just a potential future development.

TRDC state that they believe income from the playing fields would be generated via the long-term lease of the pavilion and hiring out the football pitch, fitness zone and tennis courts.

The project already has support from the council, the proposed contributors mentioned above and the Get Set 4 Tennis club, who are already active on-site.
