BIG BLAZE: Fire crews tackle large fire at Frogmore Paper Mill in Apsley

A huge fire broke out in Hemel Hempstead this afternoon (Saturday, January 22) at Frogmore Paper Mill in Apsley.

Firefighters rushed to tackle the blaze on Frogmore Road after receiving numerous calls about thick smoke and flames coming from the industrial building.

Multiple fire engines, police and ambulance services all attended the scene.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said at 4.25pm: “We are currently attending a large fire at an industrial unit on Frogmore Road, Hemel Hempstead.

“Please stay away from the area to give emergency vehicles access to the site as we continue to fight the fire.

They added: “We have received a large number of calls about this incident due to the amount of smoke, but please be reassured we are already in attendance.

“If you live in the local area, please keep windows and doors closed.”

Police closed off public access to Durrants Hill Road whilst fire crews tackled the blaze.

The historic Frogmore Paper Mill is the oldest mechanical paper mill in the world and the birthplace of paper’s industrial revolution.

Kieran Dobb, who lives opposite the scene told MyLocalNews: “There was thick smoke covering the area for quite a while and a lot of sirens. Apparently, along the canal, the air was too thick to breathe.”

Resident Pauline Pratt, who was nearby when the fire broke out, said: “I was waiting for a car park space in Dunelm. As I was sitting in the car a huge black cloud of smoke came over the building of Dunelm. The smell was bad so I decided to go home.

“As I drove around the back to get out it was thick black smoke. I managed to get out on the main road, turned right then turned into Durrants Hill Road.

“As I turned on the road two fire engines were behind me and a fireman got out and managed to get us over the bridge so the fire engines could get through. As I looked right all I could see was smoke. When I got home I looked out my bedroom window and could see a sky full of smoke.”
