A couple from Hemel Hempstead, who were married at St John’s Church in 1953, celebrated their 70th anniversary last month.
Tony lives at The Lodge Care Home in Hemel, while Sonia lives at St Christopher’s Care Home in Hatfield as she requires nursing care.
On April 4, Tony paid a special visit to Sonia to deliver a bunch of flowers, a bottle of Prosecco and a handmade card. The pair enjoyed a glass of fizz and some cake together to celebrate.
Sarah Beck, engagement manager at The Lodge Care Home, said: “Sonia is registered blind and definitely knows who Tony is as she has a big smile on her face when he comes in. They’ve been together for a long time; Tony goes and sees her every couple of weeks.
“They had a lovely afternoon together. They were given a gift of [personalised printed] cushions that were made for them, which each of them has on their bed. I printed off photos of them [Tony and Sonia] and we made a collage for Tony’s wall – he loves it. It has photos of their wedding day and from their holidays together.”
