A Berkhamsted pickleball club has competed in its first-ever national tournament.
A team of six from West Herts Wizards Pickleball Club (WHWPC), who meet and play at Berkhamsted Leisure Centre, attended the English Nationals in Bolton. They won bronze medals in the 50+ Singles, 50+ Ladies Doubles and 65+ Ladies Doubles. All six club members also had excellent wins in the Mixed Doubles.
Only invented in 1960, the sport of pickleball combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis.
Player Lyn Epps said: “Pickleball is definitely a game for all ages, but it has initially taken off in the UK in the older age group, especially with retirees and also ex-tennis/table tennis and badminton players.”
John Wilson, chair of WHWPC, said: “I was so proud to see the Wizards do so well in the nationals, particularly since we have only been a recognised club with Pickleball England since February. They were able to come home and share their new-found knowledge of a national competition for the benefit of other club members.”
