PHONY PHONECALLS: Elderly residents targeted in fake police scam

Published on: 17th July 2023   |   By: Panayiota Demosthenous   |   Category: Uncategorized

Several elderly residents from Pinner have fallen victim to a phone scam.

Fraudsters claiming to be police officers call the victim and tell them that a relative has been arrested while in possession of the victim’s bank cards. The fraudsters convince the victim to provide personal information to aid their investigation, establishing credibility by instructing victims to dial the emergency 999 number and provide a specific name and shoulder number.

In some cases, the fraudsters even told the victims they were officers from Pinner Police Station.

Residents were alerted of this new scam by PCSO Lee O’Brien, from the Pinner Safer Neighbourhood Team, on the official OWL network website. PSCO O’Brien reminded residents that genuine police officers would never ask individuals to dial 999 and verify their identity.

Anyone who has been scammed, defrauded, or experienced cybercrime is urged to report the incident directly to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
