PHAB FIVE: Innovative Northwood schoolgirls create business to support charity work

Published on: 2nd December 2020   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

Five entrepreneurial girls at St Helen’s School in Northwood have started their own online business to raise money for the school’s charity work.

Simran, Illakkia, Laila, Ria and Sierra (pictured left to right), all aged 10, started their personalised pencil business, The PHABWRAP, because they wanted to help their teacher with her charitable club.

Year 6 teacher, Andrea Cawthorne, runs an after school club for disabled children in partnership with charity, Phab (People Have Abilities) UK, who aim to promote and encourage people of all abilities to come together on equal terms, to achieve complete inclusion within the wider community.

Andrea explained: “Every other Friday (prior to the pandemic) we have guests, who are pupils from local special needs schools, come in and take part in games, crafts and other fun activities.

“I’m helped by a number of Year 10 students to run the club.

“The Year 6 girls hear plenty about what I do, and they came up to me a couple of months ago and asked if they could fundraise for me, to which I said: ‘You don’t have to do anything like that for me yet!’

“I also said that, because they can’t sell anything at school and the pandemic was putting the club on hold, it wasn’t overly practical.

“But they went away, set up their website and told kids at school they could pre-order these pencils, which they’ll wrap in whatever tape they choose and deliver them to their homes.”

Demand for the pencils was significant and the girls have swiftly raised £150 for the club, which their grateful teacher said will go towards paint and games for their guests once the club restarts.

Andrea said she was incredibly proud of the five girls, who have now become eight after recruiting classmates Rachel, Jena and Ariya.

The girls, who are all in the same social bubble, told NorthwoodNews: “Our dream has always been to help others who couldn’t help themselves, and fortunately for us, this dream came into practice in the best way possible.

“After remembering about our school’s charity, we knew that this would be the perfect chance to put our passion and entrepreneurial ship to the test – this is how we formed The PHABWRAP.

“The PHABWRAP allows you to directly order customisable accessories and have specially made tape come with it. With more than 150 pencils sold in the last month, we have raised £150 in sales and hope to do much more.”
