PARADISE LOST: Writer’s cottage exhibits Chalfont St Giles group’s ‘experimental’ artworks

Published on: 22nd June 2024   |   By: Annabel Stock   |   Category: Uncategorized

As part of Bucks Art Week, Milton’s Cottage in Chalfont St Giles is exhibiting the “eclectic” and “experimental” work of a local group.

Simon Brewster has been running the Scout Hut Art Workshops, based in Chalfont St Giles, for 14 years. The classes run during the day on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Simon says the group is not your stereotypical village art club.

He said: “I encourage people to be experimental and different and to take inspiration from contemporary artists. I want to challenge what art is considered to be in the provincial setting. Making art isn’t about making something to decorate your home with or making something someone wants to buy, but about challenging your perceptions. I take it quite seriously!”

The group has many established artists as well as beginners, and Simon encourages everyone to progress at their own pace.

The group were invited to put on a small-scale show at Milton’s cottage, as one of the venues of Bucks Art Week, so the group have been busy responding to Milton’s work with an eclectic mix of pieces. The group have become “migratory” since their beloved scout hut flooded in February but have enjoyed working in the historical setting of Chalfont St Giles church. Some of the pieces include brass rubbings made in the church as well as stitched pieces, paintings and photo transfers. Simon himself has made some tiny angels, inspired by Milton’s Paradise Lost, which will be dotted around the cottage.

He said: “I wanted the exhibition to be subtle and the angels are little extras that will bump into visitor’s periphery. I love the idea of Milton sitting at his desk and looking around and seeing all these little angels.”
