ONE YEAR ON: New data shows ULEZ expansion has reduced emissions across Greater London

Published on: 24th August 2024   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

This month marks the first anniversary of the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to the Greater London area.

Coming into effect on August 29, 2023, the expansion means that anyone driving a vehicle which doesn’t meet certain emission standards in the zone has to pay a £12.50 daily charge.

The expansion proved controversial and was unpopular across Northwood and the wider Hillingdon area. David Simmonds CBE, MP for Northwood, Ruislip and Pinner, stated his belief that the decision was one of the major reasons the area didn’t vote for Mayor of London Sadiq Khan in this year’s mayoral election.

However, new data released at the end of last month has revealed that the ULEZ expansion has dramatically reduced emissions. Levels of roadside nitrogen dioxide in Outer London are estimated to be 21 per cent lower since August 2023.

Mayor Khan said: “The decision to expand the ULEZ London-wide was a difficult one, but necessary to save lives, protect children’s lungs and help reduce the risk of Londoners developing health issues.”
