ON YOUR MARKS! St Albans duo to take on challenge to race across the globe

This month, St Albans News spoke to two St Albans locals who are taking part in season four of a successful BAFTA-winning series.

Trainee pilot Owen Wood and football referee Alfie Watts are the youngest duo to be taking part in this year’s Race Across the World, where five teams must battle it out on a 15,000km journey across East Asia.

Owen said: “We met at school and have been friends ever since. We started going on trips around Europe and so on, and have always liked travelling.”

Alfie continued: “It was my idea to do the show, but there wasn’t much convincing on either side really; we knew we had to do it!”

The journey will see them race through multiple countries, leaving behind their smartphones, internet access and bank cards, with the aim of being the first to make it to the final checkpoint.

When asked about the hardest part of the show, Alfie said: “Not being on social media wasn’t that much of a big deal; it was more about missing the contact with people you love.”

Owen added: “Not being able to speak the language was also difficult!”

Finishing each other’s sentences, it is clear that the two boys are a great team. The pair explained that despite half expecting to fight during the challenge, they have only fond memories upon reflection.

Alfie said: “We’re both 21 and moving into adulthood, so it was quite a nice way to close the chapter of our childhood. This is an opportunity not a lot of people get but everyone in the country wants. To be able to do that at this stage of our lives is great!”

Race Across the World starts at 9pm today (Wednesday, April 10), on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
