A veteran from Pinner has been jailed for five years after assaulting a woman with a bottle of champagne.

William Hilton, 37, appeared for sentencing at Southwark Crown Court on March 28. Earlier this year, he had been found guilty of wounding with intent.

The court heard that in May 2022, Hilton was at Zebrano cocktail bar and nightclub in Soho when he overheard a comment about his sister from victim Gemma Scott, who had been out with a friend at the theatre.

Ms Scott suffered a cut to her scalp and a cut above her eyebrow.

The court heard that the bottle did not smash but fell out of Hilton’s hand. Prosecutor Terence Woods said that Hilton punched the victim at least once and was seen trying to punch her again before she fell to the floor, seemingly unconscious.

Hilton was apprehended by security staff before being arrested by police.

He was convicted in February this year of wounding with intent following a trial, before appearing before the court on Thursday, March 28, for sentencing. He was sentenced to five years in prison with a three-year extended licence period.

The court heard Hilton had previous convictions for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault committed in September 2016 in a nightclub in Harrow.

The judge said Hilton choked one man and punched another, giving him a black eye and knocking out some teeth during this incident.

The court also heard that he was someone “prepared to put himself in harm’s way in defence of others” both by being a former member of the armed forces and by volunteering to deliver PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic.
