Rickmansworth Players, who are on a mission to provide quality entertainment to the community, are exceeding expectations on all fronts.
Having celebrated their 80th anniversary last year, they recently won three awards at the National Operatic and Dramatic Association Awards, which recognise excellence in amateur theatre.
This included the Charles Sumner trophy for Best Male Performance in a Play for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the Joe Putnam Award for Best Production of a Musical and the Molly Harle Award for Best Female Character in a Musical, both for The Little Mermaid.
Their next production is Treasure Island, which was written for the National Theatre for their Christmas show in 2014 and is a retelling of the original 19th century novel.
As of what audiences can expect from the upcoming show, director Sarah Rodrigues told Ricky News: “It’s a comedy drama; there are some very funny moments in it, but also plenty of suspense and peril.
“We’re also really lucky to have been given permission to use the sea shanties used in the original production, which really adds to the atmosphere of it all.
“It’s a technically difficult show, but we have an amazing cast. We’ve just started rehearsing the combat scenes and they already look amazing. The whole show is going to take audiences on an adventure.”
Asked what makes the Ricky Players so special, Sarah said it’s all down to the members who “contribute huge amounts of time and their talent to push the boundaries of what amateur theatre can do”.
She added: “We get comments from people that it’s like coming to see a professional show. We’re all working together to achieve one goal, which is always to put on the best show possible.”
Treasure Island is on at Watersmeet from November 19 to 22. Find out more at www.rickyplayers.co.uk
