NUMBER ONE: Croxley boxer Ellie is world champion following Youth Games win

Croxley Muay Thai boxing champion Ellie Harber is coming back from the World Youth Games as a world champion.

During the tournament, held in Venice, Italy, between June 22 and 26, Ellie was declared the Under 18s Under 60kg World Boxing Council gold medallist. She was one of 32 Team England athletes to walk away from the games with a medal.

Her final bout was against fellow 17-year-old fighter Pornkamon Thongpuk of Thailand. In a highly anticipated fight, Ellie was the dominant force, confidently using all moves available to her to win the matchup in two three-minute rounds.

It was an especially important victory for Ellie, following a close defeat in her previous fight in Watford only a week before.

She said: “This gold medal means so much to me, as I knew I was coming off a loss and had to get straight back to training the day after. I recognised that in Venice I had to perform at my absolute best.

“Pornkamon was a tough competitor who fought on one of the largest Muay Thai shows in the world, One Championship. However, I was determined to beat her. I am looking forward to the future now and I am confident I have so much more to give.”

Ellie has thanked Lyndon and Christian Knowles from her home club, The Knowsley Academy, and Team England coaches Richard and Lisa Smith, as well as her sponsors GPC Group Limited and Muay Thai Magic for their support.
