Watford FC fans have been sharing their confusion, anger and upset after Hornets legend Luther Blissett OBE revealed he had been dropped as club ambassador.
Luther is a firm pillar of Watford FC’s history and holds the club’s all-time record for appearances and goals, having played 503 games and scored 186 goals. He was awarded an OBE in 2022.
On Boxing Day, Luther took part in Watford FC’s Xmas Shout-out, a social media project encouraging the community to thank their friends and family, with the chance to hear their wishes pre-match or at half-time.
The news that Luther had been dropped came just weeks after he suffered a brain bleed and collapsed at the mylocalHero awards in November.
On his Xmas Shout-out post on Facebook, Luther said: “Recently, the club decided to remove me as your club ambassador, with no word, no reason, no warning. It broke my heart.
“As your ‘favourite son’, this was, I was led to believe, the beginning of a platform of ambassadors I would create and fan engagement ideas that would keep the true spirit of the Golden era alive, following in those footsteps Graham Taylor OBE talked about.
“Your support and get-well messages were what helped pick me up from the stress and disappointment, even when the club did not get in touch. Seeing such an outpouring of goodwill and good wishes from the supporters and public reminds you about our club’s great tradition given to us by Graham Taylor OBE… family.
“You remain mine. A heartfelt thank you.”
The post received more than 200 responses from fans, reflecting on Luther’s years of volunteering, fundraising, and commitment to supporting the community of Watford and beyond, as well as anger at the club’s decision.
