NO ENTRY: Popular garden near Stanmore remains shut at a time when residents need it most

In a time when we need our outdoor spaces the most, King George V Memorial Gardens located in Canons Park has been locked off since April.

The garden was shut initially for social distancing but remains shut and one user of the garden has had enough.

Tony said that he regularly enjoyed the garden at the start of the first lockdown and is disappointed that the area has been shut off for so long.

He said: “Places like that are gold dust. During the first lockdown it was lovely, as it was the start of spring and you could go and relax, it was a beautiful place to go.”

Since it has been shut Tony has set up the @GvgReopen Twitter account to try and get to the bottom of the matter.

He said: “I don’t think the council seem to realise it’s a really valuable space for people who live nearby.”

A Harrow Council spokesperson said: “We have tried opening it up on a number of occasions but unfortunately a minority of people have then used it to gather and carry out anti-social behaviour.

“In this current COVID-19 situation, while we will always endeavour to keep our parks and open spaces open for the good of all, sometimes we have had to sacrifice small areas to prevent vital resources being taken away from where they are needed most.

“As well as the situation with COVID-19, there are remaining health and safety issues around the repairs to a shelter and these are ongoing at this time, so the garden remains closed on safety grounds.”
