‘NICE FEELING’: Huel Tring Rugby captain celebrates 100th cap for ‘amazing’ club

Celebrating his 100th cap was something Tring resident Oliver ‘OG’ O’Gorman “always felt was far away” but is thrilled to finally be celebrating.

Olley first started playing rugby at just six years old, when his father introduced him to Tring Rugby Club, now Huel Tring Rugby.

Olley explained that he would play football on Saturdays and rugby on Sundays, but soon realised he was a lot better at the latter.

Fast forward more than two decades, and the rugby star now captains the senior team and celebrated his 100th cap last month.

Speaking to TRINGnews, he said: “It’s really amazing. Because a lot of the lads are local, and we are one of the only amateur clubs in the league that don’t get paid to play, there is a really nice feeling about it.”

Olley explained that as captain, he is also in charge of writing speeches for his teammates celebrating their achievements. Just weeks before, the skipper celebrated fellow rugby player Richard Beeny’s 200th cap. Richard joined the club on the same day as six-year-old Olley all those years ago.

Olley continued: “I’ve taken breaks due to injures which has been tough and can be quite lonely when you’re in the gym doing rehab whilst the boys are out playing. For me, 100 caps always seemed so far away. But I will continue playing for as long as my body can go.”

Sharing his highlights, Olley reflected on playing alongside his younger brother Toby and being made first team captain back in 2019.

Olley continued: “The club is more than just a rugby club. I know the sport has a lot of stigma surrounding it, but I used to be a PE teacher and I’ve seen how rugby can bring out the best in people.”

Rob Bray, sponsorship and fundraising manager, said: “Having such loyal and key players in the team is a huge inspiration to the younger players.”
