Ordinary, Everyday Super Heroes

Published on: 15th October 2014   |   By: Nik Allen

I’ve just finished a weekend of filming in preparation for the My Local Hero Awards evening on November 28th.

Along with a film crew, a journalist and support staff I spent two days at the Watford Hilton hearing some inspiring, remarkable and humbling nominations which have made our shortlist.

It was always my goal when we started the magazines to give back to the communities we served and the My Local Hero awards is the perfect way to do it. Not only do we raise thousands for local charities we also highlight some of the most selfless, compassionate and fantastic people living in our neighbourhoods.

This is the third awards evening we’ve held and along with the awards’ ceremony and musical entertainment our guest speaker will be football legend Jimmy Greaves (pictured below).

We have several categories including Parent of the Year, Child of Courage, Fundraiser of the Year and the ultimate accolade My Local Hero 2014.

The filming of the nominations proved to be exceptionally emotional. There were some incredible stories of courage, determination and kindness. People took time out of their weekends to come along and share with us their nominations and why they thought they should win.

What struck me most about those who were nominated was that they’re ordinary, everyday people doing incredible things. These are the real super heroes amongst us.

We heard from the wife of a man who saved another man’s life by leaping into a canal to pull him out when he fell in unconscious. The mother of a little girl who saved her dad’s life through her calmness and quick thinking shared with us the drama of that day.

We had people speaking about the kindness of their neighbours, the achievements of young sports people and so much more.

These are just a few of the stories we’ll be honoured to share with the audience on the evening.

The video recordings will be played before the winners of each category are announced and I’m sure there will be a few tears from the audience when they hear these heart warming stories.
