Last Friday we hosted the fourth My Local Hero Awards 2016.
And judging by the phenomenal feedback we’ve received it’s been judged our best one yet.
The event took a lot of hard work and effort from a lot of people to put together but the verdict was unanimous – it was an unforgettable experience.
When we had the original idea for the evening back in 2009 it was simply to give the local heroes in the neighbourhoods we served a platform to be recognised – and raise money for local charities.
To hear so many remarkable people’s stories over the years has been memorable, inspiring and humbling.
The support the awards receive from local business sponsors and local people attending has always been incredibly generous.
We held it at The Grove Hotel in Watford and apart from a couple of little hiccups they handled the evening well and looked after all of the 300 guests who attended.
In my speech during the evening I mentioned the quote ‘We make a living by what we get but make a life by what we give.’ And the people who were nominated on the evening all gave incredibly selflessly, generously and inspirationally.
When all the final monies come in we will have raised more than £12,000 for the four local charities we were supporting on the evening. Combat Stress, Herts Inclusive Theatre, DEMAND and the Hospice of St Francis.
Before this year’s event, I thought this would be the last. It’s stressful, time consuming and shattering in equal parts.
But now, having seen the impact the evening had on the people who attended and the charities supported by it I’m considering doing it all over again in two years time.
Watch this space and a huge thank you to EVERYONE who played their part in this year’s and previous year’s successes.
Thanks for reading,
