NEW LOOK: Tring farm shop to be staffed by young people with learning difficulties

A local family that has taken up post at a Tring farm shop is providing young people with special needs and learning difficulties with the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the workplace.

The previous team at Dunsley Farm Shop announced on social media that they were departing on January 3. Ten days later, the shop reopened under the stewardship of the Cannone family. Town mayor Nigel Nutkins, who makes Tring Apple Juice which is sold in the store, was in attendance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Eighteen-year-old Connor, who had been working at the farm shop for a year, will now be moving into a management position as his father and stepmother, Keith and Lisa, have taken on running the shop.

Keith and Lisa of Central Training Group run special educational needs centres in Aylesbury and Stevenage, whilst also having a small hold in Wigginton.

Keith told Tring News: “This will help them understand how to work and what that means. Maths on the till, cleaning, managing stock; these are all things that they can be learning.”

Lisa said: “There are a lot of autistic people who struggle to find work. There’s so many aspects they can learn here that will help them become more employable.”

The first job for students is to help out with the conversion of the butcher’s room back into a café.

Keith said: “Before it was a butcher’s counter, there used to be a tearoom. We’re putting it back to what it was, which people seem to be happy about!”

The farm shop is open now, with the tearoom expected to be ready by the middle of February.
