Watford Mencap has announced plans that will open an exciting new chapter for the charity and the outstanding services it provides local children, young people and adults with learning disabilities.
The charity has completed the purchase of 92a Langley Road, with the support of Watford Borough Council, which will mean a new home for Watford Mencap, giving it the space and future certainty it has been looking for in the town.
Over the next six months, 92a Langley Road will undergo a refurbishment programme that will create a welcoming and safe hub in the heart of the community, providing daily support for its service users and specialist activity space bookable by the hour to other community groups, local charities and families.
The move from the charity’s current home at the Lemarie Centre in St Albans Road has been made possible with the support of Watford Borough Council.
As a public sector organisation, the council was able to negotiate the purchase of 92a Langley Road from Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust (HCT), the previous owners, before it was marketed for sale on the open commercial market.
Once this purchase was complete, the council simultaneously completed an agreement with Watford Mencap to pass the property directly to them in a back-to-back, not for profit transaction.

The new facility in the heart of the Watford community provides a permanent home from which our caring and experienced teams will be able to support people to live the lives they want for themselves.

Elliot Howard-Jones, Chief Executive of Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust said: “We are pleased an alternative use has been found for this building and that local residents will soon be able to participate in the services provided by Mencap.”
