NEW DEVELOPMENT: Up to 850 homes could be built near Berkhamsted

Published on: 29th July 2024   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Consultations have been taking place for plans for up to 850 new homes to the south of Berkhamsted.

Property developers Taylor Wimpey held their first of two public exhibitions regarding the plans at the Old Hall of Berkhamsted Boys’ School on Wednesday, July 17. A second event will take place later this year.

As well as the new homes, the proposals also include land for a new primary school and children’s nursery, a local community hub with space for shops and a GP, allotments, children’s play parks, sporting facilities, and more. All of this is subject to consultees.

Taylor Wimpey are also emphasising that a good number of the new homes would be affordable and/or reserved for elderly people, a bus access route would be built to alleviate increased traffic (alongside a travel corridor), and that the development would boost the local economy with construction jobs and more once completed.

The land being considered for these major proposals is to the south east of the town, primarily consisting of two large fields that currently border the existing Thomas Coram Church of England School.

As part of Dacorum Borough Council’s emerging draft of the area’s Local Plan, this land has already been highlighted as a key location for any future housing developments within the next few years, with it also having been done so in previous years.

A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey said: “We would like to thank everyone who attended our public consultation event for the proposed development in South Berkhamsted. We understand the importance of listening to the community and we will consider all feedback as we finalise our outline planning application.”

As they haven’t published the survey feedback, I’m guessing it was overwhelmingly hated by residents.
