‘MY ESCAPE’: Chorleywood Manor Care Home resident expresses emotions through art following stroke

Published on: 9th May 2025   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

An 88-year-old resident from Chorleywood Manor Care Home has defied the odds to create some extraordinary paintings, despite losing the use of her dominant hand after a stroke.

Yvonne Field suffered a stroke in 2016 that left her paralysed on her right side. A lifelong artist, she was determined not to let this setback stop her from doing what she loved.

Yvonne painstakingly taught herself to paint using her left hand. After eight months of dedication, she has completed breathtaking portraits of her musical heroes, an achievement she describes as both emotional and empowering.

She said: “It was frustrating and heartbreaking at times, but art has always been my sanctuary; I wasn’t about to let it go.”

Chorleywood Manor Care Home has proudly showcased Yvonne’s inspiring artwork, with a number of her vibrant paintings adorning its walls.

She continued: “Art has been my escape, my way of expressing emotions that words sometimes fail to capture. Even after my stroke, I knew I had to find a way to keep going.”
