This month, HEMELnews spoke with Hemel Hempstead resident David Newland about his exciting career, during which he has worked on several major film and TV projects.
David is a film and video game lover who began his career as a musician. In 2017, one of his close friends messaged him about making music for an indie movie he was working on, called Bounty Hunted, which paid homage to 80s action films.
David explained: “One thing led to another, and I was getting messages saying, ‘my friend would love to use your music for his new film.’ Just from word of mouth, I began helping people in the industry.”
Since then, David has worked on the soundtracks for tens of movies, trailers, TV shows and animations.
He continued: “I’ve always enjoyed making music and if I wasn’t doing movie soundtracks, I would still be a musician. It’s something I love doing!”
One quiet day, David was scrolling through Facebook when he saw a friend of his asking for voice actors to work with him that afternoon. A spur of the moment decision led David to reply, and he was then asked to recite some lines.
It wasn’t until a few months later that David saw a message from the same man, thanking David for his participation in Kevin Spacey’s 2023 movie, Control, which was shown at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.
He said: “I’m still pinching myself. Ultimately, I’m just a guy in his room with a computer, a microphone and an internet connection. To go from that to the credits of a Cannes Film Festival movie is amazing. I’m very grateful!”
