Hillingdon Council is set to purchase a vehicle fitted with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to clamp down on unauthorised parking.
The council’s cabinet gave the green light for the vehicle to be purchased on Thursday, May 22. The new technology allows officers to conduct more checks across a wider area in less time.
The decision follows a successful 26-day trial in July 2024. A vehicle was deployed in Northwood Hills and two other boroughs to detect vehicles parking without the correct permits or exemptions. During the trial, more than 7,500 checks were made and 62 Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) were issued.
Councillor Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s cabinet member for community and environment, said: “The ANPR trial last summer clearly showed that this technology can be a more effective and efficient way to carry out parking enforcement.”
Manual verification will still occur and not all alerts will result in a PCN.
