Chorleywood residents will be delighted to hear that a herd of six cows have now returned to the Common.
The herd of Sussex cattle has been introduced as part of Three Rivers District Council’s (TRDC) annual conservation grazing programme, in collaboration with Chorleywood Parish Council (CPC).
Sussex cattle can be found in the Weald of Sussex, Surrey and Kent. Through grazing, they can help reduce the dominance of purple moor grass, which threatens diversity.
Emma Sheridan, TRDC’s associate director of customer and community, said: “The cattle are here to help manage the grasslands and eat their way through the fields. This type of grazing is beneficial to grasslands as it creates variety, with some bits left long and others removed altogether. This creates a varied sward and gives wildflowers the opportunity to set down seed.
“It is also just great to see them back in this location, and they seem to love it too!”
A spokesperson for CPC added: “Please remember to maintain a safe distance from the cattle and keep dogs on a lead in the advertised grazing areas.”
