Former trustee, speaker and volunteer at Bentley Priory Museum John Williams sadly passed away at the start of February.

John had a talk planned on Friday, February 14, which would have covered Stanmore and Harrow Weald, which had to be cancelled.

John was also the former chairman of the Stanmore Society.

In a statement on Facebook on Thursday, February 13, Bentley Priory Museum said: “John was not only one of our valued Friday Morning Talks speakers, but he had been a museum trustee for many years and continued as a volunteer after he stepped down.

“John was incredibly supportive of the museum and its foundation; promoting it in the local Stanmore community and offering hands-on support over the years. His latest project was overseeing the repainting and restoration of the bunker doors to enhance the visitor experience.

“He will be missed deeply by many of us at the museum who got know him so well over the years.”

John’s son Robert said: “John lived in Stanmore his entire life and spent many years helping improve the Stanmore area by volunteering for many local causes.

“[These included] campaigning for the restoration of St John’s red brick church and providing tours of the ruin, and the maintenance and protection of natural spaces like the Belmont Nature trail, Bentley Priory Nature Reserve, Bernays Gardens and Stanmore Common.

“One of his later contributions was to fly flags to commemorate important events, like patron saint days and anniversaries of important events at the flagpole outside Bernays Memorial Hall.

“He had a real passion for the natural environment and local history and will be greatly missed by myself and my family.”
