When asked why she decided to take on her fifth marathon, Chorleywood resident Emily Higgins says she has “caught the marathon bug!”.
Emily took on a virtual marathon on Sunday, April 27, to raise money for Mission EmployAble, where her dad Peter Higgins supports young people with learning disabilities to learn employment skills.
This was Emily’s fifth marathon, and she decided to run around Chorleywood Common, where Mission EmployAble’s Café on the Common is based.
Speaking to CHORLEYWOODnews, Emily said: “Running is more about the mental resilience, and seeing how far you can push your body. I can’t compare that feeling to anything else!”
She explained that the training block was hard, and the warm weather on the day made the run more challenging.
But she was joined by her dad, her boyfriend, and other friends, family members and members of the community for parts of the race, which spurred her on. She completed the 26.2-mile run in an impressive four hours and 16 minutes.
She continued: “It was such a unique set-up being surrounded by friends and family, but that’s what made it so special.
“As I ran around the Common, people were cheering me on, random strangers were clapping or handing my dad cash for the fundraiser; it was so nice seeing a huge level of support on the day.
“It made the marathon more special than any other I have done. Without that support, I think I would have crumbled!”
Emily has now set her sights on completing an ultra-marathon in September, the New York Marathon in November, and the Rome Marathon in March next year.
