MARATHON MISSION: MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner to take on London Marathon for cancer centre

Published on: 24th September 2022   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

David Simmonds CBE, Member of Parliament for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, is running the London Marathon this October to support a £1.6million fundraising drive for a new MRI scanner at Paul Strickland Scanner Centre in Northwood.

The new scanner will feature highly advanced deep learning software and could lead to Paul Strickland Scanner Centre scanning more cancer patients than ever before at Mount Vernon Hospital. It forms part of a significant upgrade to the medical imaging charity that brings the artificial intelligence revolution sweeping modern medicine to Mount Vernon, while improving facilities and comfort for patients.

Paul Strickland Scanner Centre is co-located with Mount Vernon Cancer Centre and has been providing very high-quality cancer imaging services to the local community since 1985.

The MP said: “I have heard from many constituents about the difference the Paul Strickland scanner centre has made to their lives. It’s a treasured local asset at Mount Vernon and a great opportunity to help their next fundraising campaign.”

Claire Strickland, Paul Strickland Scanner Centre CEO, said: “We have chosen the new MRI scanner model specifically with the needs of cancer patients in mind. It will not only create better images than MRI scanners in many other hospitals but will also produce them much more rapidly.

“At the same time, it will be more accessible to many older patients, who often have implants such as metal hips and who therefore cannot be scanned on all MRI scanners due to differences in the strength of the magnets MRI scanners use to produce images. Taken together, these improvements could mean that more patients could receive MRI scans at Mount Vernon in the future than ever before.”
